SAPA-CT 2015 MAY WORKSHOP – FROM RESEARCH TO MARKET

Aimed at promoting sciences and business in biopharmaceuticals and bridging the gap between academia and industry, the Sino-American Pharmaceutical Professionals Association - Connecticut (SAPA-CT) has successfully organized the May Workshop at Yale University on May 30, 2015. The workshop focused on biotechnology progress with its impact on translational medicine, and health economics and outcomes research in healthcare decision-making.

Dr. Yongmei Li, President of SAPA-CT, announced the opening of workshop and welcomed all the attendees. The workshop consisted of two presentation sessions, moderated by Dr. Mingqing Cai and Dr. Na Li, respectively. A round table discussion and networking session was followed after.

In the first session, Xinghua Pan, MD, PhD, as a senior Research Scientist from Yale University Department of Genetics, shared his expertise in next-generation sequencing   (NGS) and genomic medicine. Dr. Pan reviewed the current technology progress in single cell sequencing, their applications in biomedical research and implications for precise medicine. The cutting-edge technology excited attendees, which led to lively discussion and brought out the significant role of biotechnology progress in advancing medicine development. 

The second session featured Jason Zhixiao Wang, PhD, Senior Director, HEOR, Eisai Inc., with the presentation titled “The Data Journey to Value-based Healthcare”. He introduced Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR), as well as its central role in healthcare decision-making. The talk emphasized healthcare complexity and real-world considerations for pharmaceuticals, healthcare providers, governments, and patients, leading to deep reflections on concerns and challenges for pharmaceutical industry.

From the most upstream research, to the real market, these two talks revealed the trends for medicine and pharmaceuticals. With these insights, biopharmaceutical professionals, students, post-docs, and entrepreneurs engaged in further discussion on science, business, and career development in the networking session. All attendees expressed their positive feedback from the following workshop survey and benefited a lot from speakers’ talks and peer discussion.
